Few meals bring people together quite like a hearty breyane. The fragrant rice, tender meat, and rich spices make it a feast on its own — but every true breyane lover knows it’s the side dishes that complete the experience. One of the simplest, most beloved additions is a fresh tomato and onion sambal. It’s quick to prepare, adds a burst of flavor, and balances the richness of the breyane beautifully.
Ingredients
2 ripe tomatoes, finely chopped
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 green chili (optional, for a little kick)
A handful of fresh coriander leaves, chopped
Juice of half a lemon
Salt and black pepper to taste
Method
Place the chopped tomatoes and sliced onions in a mixing bowl.
Add the chili and coriander, mixing gently to combine.
Squeeze over the lemon juice, season with salt and pepper, and toss lightly.
Chill for 10–15 minutes before serving to let the flavors mingle.
Serving Suggestion
Spoon the sambal alongside your breyane and enjoy how the freshness cuts through the spice. It’s also delicious with grilled meats, curries, or even as a topping for pap.
